Protect More Than Just Your Vehicles

You have worked hard to build what you have. A serious accident or lawsuit could put your home, savings, investments, and future income at risk.

A Personal Umbrella Policy provides an additional layer of liability protection above the limits of your underlying auto, homeowners, boat, or recreational vehicle insurance. When the liability coverage on one of those policies has been exhausted, umbrella coverage may help protect you from the remaining covered expenses.

Why Consider an Umbrella Policy?

Accidents happen, and liability claims can quickly exceed the limits of a standard insurance policy. Personal umbrella insurance can provide additional protection for:

  • Injuries to others
  • Damage to someone else’s property
  • Certain lawsuits and personal liability claims
  • Legal defense costs for covered claims
  • Liability involving your home, vehicles, boat, or recreational vehicles

Without enough liability protection, your savings, assets, and even future earnings could be exposed.

Coverage From $1 Million to $5 Million

Through RLI, Personal Umbrella coverage is available with limits ranging from $1 million to $5 million. You can keep your existing auto and homeowners insurance policies, subject to RLI’s underlying coverage requirements.

RLI’s program may also accommodate households with certain risks that other umbrella carriers may not accept, including up to one DWI or DUI per household, subject to underwriting approval. RLI Personal Umbrella Insurance

How Personal Umbrella Coverage Works

Consider this example:

You are responsible for a serious accident that results in $800,000 in covered injuries and damages. Your underlying auto policy provides $500,000 in liability coverage.

Your auto insurance would respond first, up to its policy limit. Your Personal Umbrella Policy could then provide coverage for the remaining $300,000, subject to the terms, conditions, and exclusions of the policy.

Without an umbrella policy, you could be personally responsible for that remaining amount.

An Extra Layer of Protection

A Personal Umbrella Policy may be worth considering if you:

  • Own a home or other property
  • Have savings, investments, or retirement accounts
  • Own multiple vehicles, collector vehicles, a boat, or recreational vehicles
  • Have teenage or young adult drivers in your household
  • Frequently host guests at your home
  • Want to help protect your future earnings
  • Want more liability protection than your current policies provide

You do not have to consider yourself wealthy to benefit from umbrella coverage. If you have assets or income worth protecting, an umbrella policy can provide an important additional safety net.
